Vertical Oyster Gardens Workshop

Fun! Informative! For the Love of LGI!

A huge shout out to the Coastal Conservation Association  (CCA) who provided hundreds of pounds of oyster shells, work stations, and all the tools needed to construct the VOGs.  They gave an instructional presentation and guided us through the assembly process.  We are so thankful for their time and tenacity to come all the way to LGI via ferry with all these supplies!

Lines were prepared by cutting and burning the ends of precisely measured lengths of rope.  The ends were tied and the ropes were coiled ready to be strung.

Meanwhile, buckets and buckets of oysters went to the hole drilling stations.  Members learned how to use specific tools to put a hole in a precise location of each oyster shell.  Hit it too hard and the shell breaks!

With rope and oyster shells ready, the assembly begins.  Volunteers string the shells on the prepared rope and now our oyster gardens are ready to go to work!

Its time to take our oyster gardens to hang on our docks to begin attracting oyster larvae.  Shortly we will have new oysters growing on the gardens, filtering and cleaning our LGI waters!

A Hearty THANK YOU

to all of our members who came out, got dirty, and worked hard for the love of LGI!

And we had a lot of fun along the way!
