The Little Gasparilla Island Preservation Alliance (LGIPA) is a grassroots organization that came together to address the concerns of Little Gasparilla Island homeowners regarding a proposed new central low-pressure sewer system applied for by Environmental Utilities (EU). Initially, the LGIPA consisted of just five neighbors who recognized the potential financial burden the project could impose on the island’s residents.
LGIPA consulted with industry experts and realized that the actual costs could be significantly higher than proposed due to inflation and unforeseen construction expenses, potentially leaving homeowners with a bill ranging from $30K to $40K per parcel.
As the application was being considered by the Public Service Commission (PSC), LGIPA was formed in the 12th hour, driven by a sense of urgency and the need to ensure that the rights and interests of all Little Gasparilla Island homeowners are protected.
The LGIPA is collaborating closely with Palm Island Estates (PIE), another island community facing similar challenges, to avoid duplication of efforts and costs. The LGIPA’s primary goal is to prevent the imposition of exorbitant costs on the island’s residents and to secure a fair and financially sustainable solution for the community.
A looming threat is again casting a shadow over our magical island in the form of this proposed central low-pressure sewer system. We are determined to ensure that the rights and interests of all homeowners on Little Gasparilla Island and the neighboring islands were protected.
As the battle against the proposed sewer system application continues, the LGIPA remains committed to preserving the island’s natural beauty, fostering a sense of community, and ensuring the financial security of its residents.
