Why Support the LGI Preservation Alliance?

The Little Gasparilla Island Preservation Alliance (LGIPA), a Not-For-Profit Corporation dedicated to safeguarding Little Gasparilla Island (LGI) and defending homeowner rights through environmentally sound means. Our current focus is on opposing the new central low-pressure sewer system application at the Public Service Commission (PSC) proposed by Jack Boyer, also known as Environmental Utilities (EU).

As of April 3, 2024, EU has filed an application with the Public Service Commission (PSC) to install a low-pressure central sewer system on LGI and neighboring islands. Our experts suggest that EU’s estimated costs are significantly understated, potentially burdening homeowners with unforeseen expenses possibly as high as $40,000 per homeowner of which according to Charlotte County Ordinance 3-8-41 you will be forced to pay these costs whether you agree with them or not.

Private utilities like EU lack access to environmental grants, which could alleviate financial strains for homeowners. Furthermore, the proposed sewer system’s environmental impact remains uncertain, lacking updated studies specific to LGI’s ecosystem. Delaying the project for further analysis would ensure the preservation of our island’s delicate environment.

LGIPA urges unity among LGI property owners to halt the proposed application before irreversible actions are taken by the PSC.

We have spoken with many property owners and found many varying opinions and concerns:

1. Many don’t want sewer at all.

2. Many want sewer but not this proposed sewer.

3. Many are concerned by the potential cost to homeowners of up to $40k

4. Many are concerned by the lack of state/federal grant funding that would greatly reduce homeowner costs by up to 90%

5. Many are concerned about the forced hook up cost per CC Ordinance 3-8-41

6. Many have concerns about the lack of experience or expertise of Environmental Utilities.

7. Many are concerned about the extreme environmental risks of this proposed sewer.

In all these cases there is only one solution

WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO STOP

THIS PROPOSED SEWER APPLICATION NOW!

This battle requires financial support. Donations are crucial to fund legal proceedings and protect LGI from potential adverse impacts. Transparency in fund allocation is paramount, with allocation being reported to members.

We acknowledge and collaborate with Palm Island Estates (PIE) in opposing the same application, aligning efforts to achieve our shared objectives.  It is imperative that LGI homeowners have their own legal representation.

Your contributions, whether as a property owner or supporter, are vital to our cause.

Collaboration with Neighbors:

While Palm Island Estates (PIE) and Little Gasparilla Island (LGI) share a common goal in opposing the application, they also recognize the unique and separate issues that each of our respective Islands face. In a recent collaboration, both entities are working together to address these shared and distinct challenges. LGIPA emphasizes the importance of having its own legal representation for our homeowners. This ensures that if PIE is granted an exemption, LGI will also be exempted, given the recognition of the distinct issues each Island faces. By working together, both organizations are committed to protecting the rights of property owners on both islands and presenting a united front in their ongoing battle.
